Winter Pet Care

When temperatures dip below freezing and the wind chill makes it feel even colder, animal control officers in Minot see an increase in neglect calls.

Animal Control Officer Dick Schnell says their biggest concern is the extreme cold temperatures. He says pets should not be outside for long periods of time unattended.

The wind chill is dangerous even for animals with fur coats. Schnell says outdoor animals should have adequate water and shelter. Pet carriers are not adequate, shelters should be commercially manufactured or well-constructed.

The water should be changed several times a day so it`s not frozen.

"Don`t leave them unattended and what I mean by that is, you don`t have to stand out there with them but watch them from inside the house. Just don`t chain them up outside and think they`ll be fine because animals are effected just like humans are with wind chill and yes they have fur but they will freeze and get cold just like you do," says Schnell.

Schnell says an important rule of thumb if it is too cold for you to be outside, it is too cold for your pet.
